Digital Twin

A Digital Twin is a virtual representation of a physical object, in digital format.

In the built environment a Digital Twin is a visual 3D model that accurately reflects a structure, building or piece of infrastructure to a very high level of accuracy.

Digital Twins can also store a large amount of digital information about all aspects of a structure, building or piece of infrastructure including static data and live data:

  • Static data includes the physical position, sizing and other spatial details of all building elements, details of plant and equipment, product data, materials data, plant service intervals, supplier information, manufacturer information and more.
  • Live data includes information such as occupancy rates, temperature, energy usage, human mobility and movement, services utilisation, and any other real time monitoring of building or infrastructure operations.

This information is incredibly powerful not only for the planning and construction of buildings and infrastructure, but also for asset management elements such operating cost control, energy optimisation, predictive maintenance, managing rental yield, and other economic factors.

A Digital Twin with static and live data capability gives asset managers the ability to understand an  asset,  and  manage it in a way that optimises return on investment.

Digital Twins can be created and held in different software packages including offerings from Autodesk, Oracle, Willow, Bentley, and others.

McGregor creates Digital Twin models for new or existing assets from scratch, or re-engineers existing Digital Twin models in any preferred BIM software package—McGregor is software neutral and is experienced in all mainstream BIM software packages.

McGregor can also assist companies to specify the digital information requirements of contactors and sub-contractors to ensure it is provided to the correct specification and level of detail from the outset, to enable creation of a Digital Twin.
